Your Body and Your Health (2)

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV)

We established previously that our bodies are the earth suits that aid us to function here on earth just like astronauts require space suits to function in space. The moment the earth suit ceases to function, we’ll have to exit this planet via physical death. Hence, it is important to care for our bodies until our assignments are concluded. We equally established that our body is designed for a purpose; we should accept and thank God for our bodies; we do not own our bodies hence the need to use them as stewards who will someday give an account; and finally we need to know and understand our bodies because each person’s body is different just as each person’s assignment is different and we need to be sensitive to our bodies.

Next to note is that your diet has a direct impact on the quality of your body; Exodus 23:25. A good chunk of the diseases in the world now are waterborne, therefore, the quality of water is affecting the quality of people’s health on a global dimension. The quality of the food we eat determines the quality of our body. The general principle here would be to stay close to food in its natural state as much as possible. We may not get all the nutrients we need from the food we eat hence, the need to have vitamin supplements.

Rest and sleep are absolutely essential; don’t overdrive your body. It is only God who neither slumbers nor sleeps but we humans do. Not sleeping is proof that you have added God’s work to yours. Get adequate sleep; Mark 6:31. It is the principle of the Sabbath; God designed man to work for six days and rest on the seventh. Take a break and after some weeks or months of working, take a vacation.

Next, move your body, do exercise. Exercise helps keep your blood flowing, strengthens your heart, increases the body’s capacity for withstanding stress, helps in weight control, and helps your energy level and your mood. Changes in technology have made life a whole lot more sedentary for us. Jesus and the apostles did a lot of walking as compared to us currently who hardly walk but ride.

Next is, do not abuse your body. Remember that your body is given to you for the fulfilment of God’s purposes; 1 Corinthians 6:18. Do not use the body for what God did not design it for. Don’t use the body for anything the Holy Spirit will not be involved in because when the power of the Holy Spirit is not active in your body anymore it leaves room for other things to attack the body. 1 Peter 3:10 (NLT) admonishes that we control our tongues if we aspire to see good days. James 3 explains how powerful the tongue is and anyone who can control the tongue can control the whole body hence, be careful what you do with your tongue. Walk in love and keep your tongue from speaking evil.  Don’t speak evil about others and let what comes out of your mouth be positive at all times. Keep your conversations pure. Do not ingest things that God hasn’t designed your body to ingest and don’t ingest things in unusual quantities. Don’t let the place of the Holy Spirit in you be overtaken by what you ingest.

Do your annual physical examination. This gives the doctor the opportunity to tell you the general state of your health and what you need to pay attention to.

Finally, be continually filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has a direct impact on your physical body; Romans 8:11. Be conscious of the Holy Spirit and obey the Holy Spirit. Be sensitive to His leading.

May Deuteronomy 34:7 be our reality in our lifetimes; living to a ripe full age with vigour and vitality.
